Tower Hamlets Green Party to stand mayoral candidate in 2026

Councillor Nathalie Bienfait has announced that Tower Hamlets Green Party will be standing a mayoral candidate and their largest ever slate of council candidates in May 2026. She promises an energetic and positive campaign to build on the success of the party’s two Tower Hamlets candidates in last year’s general election.

The party, which currently has four MPs, has recently seen a large increase in its membership nationally and is now perceived as a significant challenger to Labour, Reform and the Tories in many parts of the country.

Councillor Bienfait says she believes this is because “voters, especially young voters, want a progressive party which pushes back against the climate denialism of Trump, Reform and the Tories. They want wealth redistribution to create a more equal society, one without food banks, homelessness and chronic poverty.

“They know that that even if Labour, Reform and the Tories want to pin the blame on migrants and asylum seekers for what’s wrong in the country today, Tower Hamlets has always welcomed people from all over the world seeking safety and a better life.

“The overwhelming majority of Tower Hamlets voters want the British government to end its unconditional support for the slaughter of the people of Gaza. We are the only national party which is prepared to call it a genocide

We are realistic. We know that even if we do win enough votes to run the council that there are limits put on us by central government. However, our progressive vision is for Tower Hamlets and the whole country.”
